Nasal Drainage

Nasal Drainage

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, seasonal allergies (also known as hay fever) affects more than 35 million Americans and results in 16 million annual visits to the doctor. Symptoms usually appear about the same time every year and can include runny nose, sneezing, congestion and itchy ears, eyes, nose and throat. Seasonal allergies are usually triggered by airborne pollen of grass and trees and weed mold spores.

Allergy

An allergic reaction is more of the bodies reaction to substances in the environment. These substances are called allergens, and that causes the allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction are very similar to that of a cold, but a cold usually resolves 7 to 10 days, while an allergic reaction can last for weeks or even months. Also, during a cold nasal discharge is usually thick and yellow, but in a reaction Allergic fine and clear.

Treatments

Treatment for allergies can be as simple as using counter products or may include visits to the allergist for allergy skin testing and immunotherapy (allergy shots). This article focuses on the therapy. If you do not find relief from these suggestions should seek assistance from your doctor.

Histamine

When exposed to an allergen, the body responds in different ways, including the production of histamine additional. Histamine causes inflammation, swelling, runny nose, sneezing and itching. Histamine also narrows the airways in the lungs (Constricted bronchi) and increases the secretion of stomach acid.

Antihistamines

This class of drugs is a good point basis for the treatment of seasonal allergies. There are several more of the antihistamine medications available, many of which were previously only available on prescription. They work by blocking the action of histamine in the body.

Antihistamines are usually separated into first and second generation agents. Antihistamines first generation are considered sedative, while second-generation agents are commonly known as non-sedating. In fact, all antihistamines are the potential to cause drowsiness.

Some of the first-generation antihistamines are the most popular diphenhydramine (Benadryl), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton) clemastine (Tavist) and doxylamine (Unisom). Doxylamine and diphenhydramine are so sedative that is marketed as a sleep aid. Clemastine is less sedating than these and chlorpheniramine is less sedative clemastine. One advantage with these antihistamines is their ability to decrease production of mucus in the nose due to its strong anticholinergic effects.

The second-generation antihistamines include cetirizine (Zyrtec) and loratadine (Claritin). Are much less sedating than first generation antihistamines and is dosed once a day. They also have fewer side effects, but as a result are less likely to dry a runny nose.

Check with your doctor before using antihistamines if you have glaucoma, prostate problems, emphysema, bronchitis, or you are taking sedatives.

Decongestants

As congestion is one of the symptoms of allergies, it makes sense to use this class of drugs to get some relief. Only two oral decongestants counter. They are the phenylephrine (Sudafed) and pseudoephedrine (Sudafed PE). They work by constricting blood vessels. This in turn leads to reduction of the nasal mucosa (mucous membranes) that allows more air to pass, improve drainage and feel less congested.

Decongestants also can be found in nasal sprays such as oxymetazoline (Afrin). They can provide immediate relief oral decongestants, but the nasal spray should not be used for more than 2 to 3 days due to worsening congestion after quitting. This is called rebound congestion.

Talk to your doctor before using decongestants if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease or diabetes.

Antihistamine decongestant combination

There are many combination products on the market. There may be a benefit from taking a combination of products, because the two classes of drugs to work together to improve symptoms. Ask your pharmacist to help select a combination product that is right for you. Alternatively, you could buy a decongestant and an antihistamine separately and take the two together. One advantage of doing it this way, can selectively take one or the other or both together depending on their symptoms.

Nasal irrigation

This is a good alternative treatment for seasonal allergies. It is an ancient technique of using a salt solution bathing or washing the nasal passages. The theory is, eliminating allergens and mucus to improve normal function and reduce inflammation.

Cromolyn nasal spray

cromolyn nasal spray (Nasalcrom) is a lesser-used medication. Can be used in combination with other treatments. Cromolyn helps stabilize mast cells. These are the cells that react to allergens in pollen and other problems that cause allergies. Buy the stabilization of these cells release less inflammatory chemicals like histamine. In order for the nasal spray cromolyn is effective, it must be used several times a day. Symptoms may take 1 to 2 weeks before they get better. Do not use to treat sinus infections, asthma or cold symptoms.

Local honey

An alternative therapy for allergies involves eating 1 to 2 teaspoons a day of local honey. Local honey is defined as the honey is within 30 to 300 miles (depending on who you talk to) from where you live. Bees make honey from pollen of plants (often the same ones that cause allergies). The theory is that continuous daily exposure to pollen in honey reduces the possibility that you will react to it when exposed to air. Some people swear by this, but studies have been conducted do not support it.

Conclusion

Not many available treatments for seasonal allergies. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, begin treatment a few weeks before your symptoms usually begin and continue through the allergy season. If the above treatments will not provide relief to seek the advice of a doctor.
